Flora MacDonald at Dunstaffnage Castle

At the weekend Flora MacDonald will be at Dunstaffnage Castle as part of Historic Environment Scotland’s Jacobite Tour .

It was in this castle that Flora was imprisoned for several days before being taken first to Edinburgh and then to London, where she was finally released in 1747.

She was very much the celebrity and though a prisoner of the state, was allowed visitors who came to marvel at this Highland Lass as they saw her. Captain Campbell who had interviewed her after her capture and who was making arrangements for her transport south, requested that she was well looked after while in the castle, referring to her as “a pretty, young rebel..who has been drawn into a most unhappy scrape..”

Flora is often portrayed as romantically linked to Bonnie Prince Charlie, a wee lass from the Highlands who would do anything for the Jacobite cause. Nothing could be further from the truth. Come and discover her side of the story this weekend, 12-4.
